Acupuncture
The fundamental principles of acupuncture are to treat the person as an integrated whole in body, mind, and spirit, and to remedy the root cause of illness and disease, not just the symptoms. It can be undertaken at the same time that other treatment modalities and medications are being used, and it is easily integrated into and used with conventional medicine.
While acupuncture is widely known to relieve pain, it is also helpful for many conditions in which pain is not primary, including a wide array of chronic conditions. It can be used for almost any physical or emotional problem, or simply for the desire to stay well.
People from all walks of life use acunpuncture for many different reasons. People who might particularly benefit include those:
- with chronic pain or symptoms not responding to traditional chiropractic or medical care
- who are taking several medications and are reluctant to take more, or who are concerned about possible drug interactions
- for whom there are limited medical interventions, as with metabolic disorders, degenerative diseases, allergies, arthitis, hypertension, and certain mental conditions
- who feel as though something is "wrong" even though medical tests are inconclusive
- whose symptoms seem to be associated with or worsened by stress (such as with asthma, immune deficiency, muscle pain, or migraine headaches)
- who would like additional support for their prescribed chiropractic or medical treatment, especially to help cope with side-effects or to improve vitality (such as to deal with the fatigue, nausea, and lethargy associated with chemotherapy)
- who are in basic good health and want to facilitate their well-being and prevent illness
I was first diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in December of 2001. Since then, I have struggled to keep my blood sugar levels as low as possible. Even with exercise, diet, and two medications (Metformin and Avandia), my blood sugar levels were still above normal. Dr. Bubela suggested adding acupuncture to my regimen to help control my blood sugar levels in addition to treating my allergies. I agreed. Acupuncture already helped me with my allergies. If it could help manage my diabetes, all the better! After several monthly treatments, my average blood sugar level fell from a record low of 7.1 to 6.8! [Normal range for adults is 3.5-6.1 nmol/L] I am so thrilled that I have decided to have acupuncture treatments twice a month instead of once. I hope to continue to lower my blood sugar levels until I reach my goal of 6.0. Give acupuncture a try! I would recommend it as an addition to anyone’s treatment plan for Type 2 Diabetes.
